Unlike most meteorological measures, which are scalars, wind speed is a vector.

For its complete determination one needs therefore three indications: either the three components or the magnitude and the direction (determined by two angles).

However, since the vertical component is usually very small (at least on average) compared to the horizontal components of the wind speed and the measurement of the vertical component is therefore also quite difficult, the horizontal component is generally understood to mean the wind speed. To determine this, two statements are sufficient: either the two components (N-S, W-O) or amount and direction. A characteristic of the wind, which catches the eye particularly in high wind forces, is its gustiness. According to the two determinants of wind specification one distinguishes the gustiness of the wind direction and the gustiness of the wind speed.
